Guest post: Arcadia's gift by Jesi Lea Ryan

 By Jesi Lea Ryan

Most people who experience death don’t live to tell about it.
When sixteen year old Arcadia “Cady” Day wakes in a hospital after experiencing what can only be called a psychic episode, she finds her family in tatters. With her twin sister gone, her dad moved out, her mom’s spiraling depression and her sister’s boyfriend, Cane, barely able to look at her, the only bright spot in her life is Bryan Sullivan, the new guy in school. When Bryan’s around, Cady can almost pretend she’s a regular girl, living a regular life; when he’s not, she’s wracked with wild, inexplicable mood swings. As her home life crumbles and her emotional control slips away, Cady begins to suspect that her first psychic episode was just the beginning…

Rooting paranormal fiction in realism I think we can all agree, no matter how cool they sound in theory, that vampires are not real. *Shocked face* Neither are werewolves or faeries or angels/demons (at least not the kind from urban fantasy novels). But what about psychics? Hmmm...just maybe. That’s the thought I originally had when I had the idea to write my young adult, paranormal novels Arcadia’s Gift & Arcadia’s Curse. I’ve always been fascinated by psychic phenomena. Unfortunately, I don’t have an ounce of psychic intuition, but that doesn’t stop my generally skeptical mind from wondering about the possibilities of a paranormal story that is rooted in reality. Sounds like an oxymoron, but I rolled with it, and my character, Arcadia (Cady) Day, psychic empath, was born. “Our bodies have five senses: touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing. But not to be overlooked are the senses of our souls: intuition, peace, foresight, trust, empathy. The differences between people lie in their use of these senses; most people don't know anything about the inner senses while a few people rely on them just as they rely on their physical senses, and in fact probably even more.” — C. JoyBell C. Early in my research, I stumbled upon the above quote, and I decided to base my entire fictional world on it. In my series, the soul senses were once common in early humans, but over time, as verbal and written communication flourished, these senses devolved out of the gene pool...mostly. Now, a very minor percentage of people have the recessive genes for these soul senses, and each soul sense corresponds to a psychic ability. Soul Senses Intuition Peace Foresight Trust Empathy Corresponding Psychic Gift Telepathy, Dream Walking, Clairvoyance, Clairaudience Medium, Spirit Handler Future-Teller Charismatic, Telekinetic, Hydrokinetic, Pyrokinetic Empathy, Healing Usually, the soul senses manifest themselves during puberty, but in Cady’s case, hers became active after a traumatic event. I chose to write about a psychic empath because I hadn’t read about one before. Lots of paranormal books have telepaths, mediums and telekinetics, and sometimes an empath is a side character or it is a secondary ability for the main character, but I had never read a book with a main character who was primarily an empath. (I know there are books out there with empathic characters, but I make a point now not to read them for fear they may influence my work.) I spent a lot of time doing Google searches on empathy, and didn’t come up with a lot of useful information. However, I did stumble upon a suggestion that an empath may have a larger aura field than most people, and maybe this is how they can feel the emotions of others who step into their aura. Sounded good to me, so I ran with it. Taking a “normal” sixteen year old girl and turning her into an empath overnight was a bit tricky. I wanted her to have the ability there all along, lingering just below the surface of her personality, so when the triggering event happens, the empathic abilities made sense. The first thing I did was make Cady a naturally compassionate person. She gives people the benefit of the doubt, tries to get along with others and has a huge soft-spot for animals. Secondly, Cady is an identical twin. There is lots of research on the psychic bonds between twins, so *SMALL SPOILER* when her twin sister is killed, their auras would naturally reach toward each other, thus stretching Cady’s aura field so out of shape, it never snaps back. Ta da! A psychic empath is born! Along the course of learning to use, grow and control her abilities, Cady meets several other psychics with varying gifts.

Review: Drones by Johnny Ray

Matalina heads the elite special ops of Baltonia, a small country near Switzerland, and where the Maliviziati maintain their secret society that opposes the Illuminati’s various splinter groups that want to create a new world order. While she directs the most powerful special operatives in the world, she is very capable of going solo when needed. She was bred like her parents and theirs before to be the best warrior in the world. Unfortunately, her chosen mate, Bjorn, has turned against them, killing her sister in the process. She loved him earlier, and perhaps she still does. Still, when she finds him, she will kill him.
When a new faction attempts to release drones in America, Matalina has to respond to keep this from playing into the hands of those wanting to create a new world order. She soon learns that the leader of this group is one of Bjorn’s operatives, Mario, a guy she should kill, but he is also the one person she needs to take alive to be able to locate Bjorn. With mercenaries flown in from Columbia to help this terrorist faction which was formed out of Afghanistan, this novel circles the globe as many players fight for eventual control of the world.

My review:
Strong character Matalina is a cat with special claws, one you do not want to fight with. She is special ops and a leader and a prinses, who tries hard to keep the world safe. When she is be trade by her fiancee, who gets her sister killed, she goes after him and while she is at she, she finds a dangerous group which makes drones to attack the States. All points towards Bjorn but is it? she finds leads into Afghanistan, Columbia and Germany. If she will be able to safe the world from these killer drones??? . I am not going to tell you. It is a great action book, I loved every minute of it.

Excerpt Bond of Love by Amy Suzanne

As a picturesque mother and wife, forty-one year old Avery Richards seems to have it all. Married to a successful veterinarian named Noah and mother to a spunky daughter named Kara, her life is far from awful but she is stuck. With the recent move of their daughter, who has just flown the coop for college, this story examines the deep and often-tumultuous bond between mother and child and the lengths we are willing to go to, as mothers, to sacrifice our own happiness for the ones we love.
As we watch Avery walk through her ‘new’ way of daily life, without her ambitious and stubborn child around to mother any longer, we are given a very unique opportunity to tip toe in the front row of their lives, from three very separate views. We will see life as it plays out through her mature and motherly eyes, through Kara’s young and sheltered heart, and then through ‘someone else’s eyes’ that has a vested interest in them both.
As Avery’s well-hidden web of lies come crashing down in an unexpected way, her secrets that she’s safeguarded for years will threaten to rip her peaceful world apart, as well as the world of the ones she loves most. As readers, we will watch how ONE single choice can alter everything. Each character will then be forced to examine what the true meaning of love and forgiveness means to them.
Every gamut of emotion will be explored: humor, sadness, love, joy, betrayal, hate, and forgiveness. Bond of Love will leave you pondering the age-old question: How well do YOU actually know the ones you love most?
Excerpt:

I run the heel of my shoe against the dirt causing the loose earth to billow. My parents would be appalled if they knew what I’ve been up to. I smile even bigger feeling proud. Giving the ground a stomp, I visualize my mother’s face. She had no business being a mother.
Spotting a blue jay near my army-green, two-man tent, I stand perfectly still perplexed by its simplicity. The bird pecks casually at the tree limb, as if knocking your face against a mound of bark is a fun sport. For nearly a full minute, the bird searches for an afternoon snack, and then when satisfied, effortlessly glides away.
What a life. I feel envious.
Acknowledging the irony between the bird’s life and my own, I let out a long sigh. Wishing to change things that have already been done is like trying to unclog a stopped-up drain with a pound of bacon fat. It’s pointless. I can’t change my past but I can take control of my present moment and prepare for a different kind of future.
Tilting my head backwards, unceremoniously one more time, I take one last generous chug of my sour-tasting beer. I clench my teeth hard and suck the vile liquid down. It slides down the back of my parched throat, not quite quenching my thirst, but my throat is happy to have it regardless.
Scanning my property, I feel a sense of satisfaction wash over my body. Pin-pickles stretch upward on my skin, rippling in small bubbles. I had a privileged life before, but this, this area is ALL mine.
No one can touch it. No one can tell me what to do here. It’s for her and me. No one else.

The Art of Reading
by K. M. Douglas

I wanted to share with you and your readers a series of three synchronicities that I experienced over the course of the past week. It began with a simple thought. I was contemplating how one of my goals in writing a novel was to impact readers in a profound way, one that lasted long after they had completed reading the book. A dream of mine has always been to write a book that impacted a reader in the way that some of my favorite books have impacted me in the past, leaving a lasting effect on me even to this day. Arthur Rimbaud’s A Season in Hell, Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles, Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf and Dalton Trumbo’s Johnny Got His Gun are the first four that come to mind.
I have always understood the responsibility that comes with writing. Readers are essentially allowing the writer access directly into their minds. Through pacing and the pulse and rhythm of the writing, it is possible to induce a trance-like state in a reader, much the same way as with music, and even to some degree film. But in film, the images accessed by the mind are already fully developed, where with reading, words are let in to the brain one by one and the imagery is then created by the reader herself. In this way, reading is also an art. The reader is an active, creative participant in the formation of the end product.
The second of the three synchronicities was the discovery of an online article entitled: Does Reading Actually Change the Brain? The article describes a study done by Emory University’s Center for Neuropolicy that asked the question, How [do] stories get into your brain, and what [do] they do to it? The study used a high-tech fMRI machine to trace the brainwaves of readers. Now this had already been done in other studies. What made this study different was that the previous tests had all scanned the reader’s brains while they were reading, while this study scanned the reader’s brains for five days after the reading was completed.
Gregory Burns, a neuroscientist involved in the study said, “It remains an open question how long these neural changes might last. But the fact that we’re detecting them over a few days for a randomly assigned novel suggests that your favorite novels could certainly have a bigger and longer-lasting effect on the biology of your brain.”
And that’s when the third synchronicity took place. I found a new review on my the Amazon page for my book, In the Place Where There is No Darkness, and one of the last sentences of the review contained this flattering message: “This is just a phenomenal book and this is the kind of story that will always stay in the back of [my] mind as one of the best I’ve ever read. I encourage you to give it a try, it’s well worth reading and passing on to friends!”
Stay in the back of my mind… hmmm. I don’t know if the reviewer knew the biological truth of the statement that she made, but for me, my goal had been accomplished. And what a journey it was, contemplating my writing having a lasting impact on a reader, discovering scientific evidence that writing affects the reader even deeper than I had suspected, and then receiving the affirmation that my writing did impact a reader deeply, and all within a five day period. As a creative writer, I am thankful that my book found itself a creative reader.
